DAY TOURS - GERMAN LIGHT HOUSE

Our best mixture of land and sea time, the Lighthouse tour is a combination of calm water paddling and canopy-covered hiking through the rock islands. Along with snorkeling and paddling, the German Lighthouse tour takes you on a hike along the Rock Islands' only navigable “road” to explore the remnants of Palau's German and Japanese colonial history. Originally build to service a simple kerosene-powered lighthouse, the Ngeruktabel road was upgraded by Japanese designers and converted into a true engineering marvel. Twenty-five foot long cannons were stationed all along the hillside to protect Koror's vulnerable deep water channels from possible US invasion. After sixty years of tropical growth, the road now serves as a shaded footpath, where hikers can marvel at Palau's bird life, botany, and forgotten history. Offering a commanding bird's eye view of the awe-inspiring Rock Islands, the lighthouse stands firm to this day.

A paddle through Fantasy Lake provides an opportunity to seek out Palau's endemic Fantail Flycatchers, soaring White-Tailed Tropic Bird, and the brightly-colored Palauan Fruit Dove. As we float, leaning back on our seats, enormous walls surrounding Fantasy Lake amplify the haunting flute-like call of the elusive Palauan Bush Warbler in this natural echo-chamber.

Snorkel stops include the Fantasy Channels, where we'll search for the motionless Sea Horses and their elongated Pipefish relatives. At day's end, there's just one last stop at Palau's greatest Acropora reef, Lolita's Coral Garden, an old growth forest dominated by giant table corals, thick stands of staghorn corals and luxuriant bottlebrush corals. Home to a profusion of Angel Fish, Butterfly Fish and Damsels, this unique treasure is truly an unforgettable experience.
